“I want to see my daughter-in-law at once!”

At the sound of a booming voice coming from down the hall, my eyes snapped open, and I looked around in alarm. Only when I remembered where I was, I breathed a sigh of relief and closed my eyes again.

“You mean your future daughter-in-law?”

Roman’s voice sounded half-amused and half-pissed.

I didn’t know many people who would dare to stand up to Judge Reinhardt, but Roman seemed to enjoy it.

Brandon’s voice was quieter, almost as if he was whispering.

“Is she okay? How is she feeling?”

“She’s sleeping. She’s heavily sedated, so she won’t be able to talk to you.”

I could hear the door open and then some more whispering.

“I want them arrested and put on trial,” Judge Reinhardt hissed under his breath. “They won’t get away with this.”

“She looks so pale,” Brandon said with a heavy sigh. “When will she be able to go home?”

“It’s too soon to tell.”

It sounded more like never. Roman’s voice was firm and non-negotiable.

“Look, Wyatt,” Judge Reinhardt said through his teeth. “I am well aware of your reputation. But don’t you forget this is my future daughter-in-law. I don’t want a breath of scandal to sully her reputation, do you get that?”

“If you can remember it, so can I.”

I would have laughed, but I didn’t want them to know that I was awake. I didn’t have the will or the energy to talk to either of them. The darkness became my new best friend, and I just wanted to sleep and forget about it all.
